Notable Works and Impact
Scofidio and Diller's firm became renowned for their creative approach to architecture, seamlessly blending artistic concepts with functional spaces. They designed notable landmarks such as:
- The High Line in Manhattan, a revolutionary public park built on an elevated rail line.
- Various concert halls, museums, and academic buildings that challenge conventional perceptions of space.
Recognition and Philosophy
In 1999, they made history as the first architects to receive the MacArthur Foundation “genius” grants, recognizing their groundbreaking contributions to architecture. Their firm has grown to employ about 100 architects, consistently being shortlisted for prestigious projects. Scofidio’s philosophy emphasized questioning client goals rather than simply fulfilling them, a testament to his bold and imaginative approach to design.
