A Love Story Amidst Renovation

In the heart of East London, architect Jenny Fleming found herself amidst a life-changing experience when she moved into the same street as Kevin Palmer, an antiques dealer, just before the pandemic. Concerned for her neighbor's wellbeing during the lockdown, Jenny reached out, sparking a relationship that would lead to a beautiful transformation of a small flat.

The Bijou Flat

Jenny discovered a one-bedroom flat in Keeling House, a modernist gem designed by Denys Lasdun. Despite its 33 square meters of space, the flat's potential was overshadowed by its clinical decor, resembling a dental practice with its white tiles and walls. Jenny was determined to revamp the space with Kevin's assistance.

Overcoming Challenges

Just as renovation began, Jenny faced a health crisis with a serious spinal condition, forcing her to temporarily move in with Kevin. During her recovery, they collaborated on the design, merging Kevin's antiques expertise with Jenny's architectural vision, softening her initial bold design choices.

Design Highlights

One standout feature is the joyful yellow kitchen, inspired by Jenny's love for the character Columbo. The couple cleverly utilized space-saving solutions, like a floating parcel shelf in the bedroom and a wall of yellow that conceals appliances while providing ample storage.

A Home Together

As renovations progressed, so did their relationship. They decided to live together permanently, adopting a dog named Twiggy. Jenny sold her apartment, and soon they began renovating Kevin's 1830s home, showcasing their growing bond through shared projects.
