Local firm Child Studio drew inspiration from modernist European villas to craft the interior of a townhouse in London's Belgravia area. The three-storey home, designed for an art collector, is nestled within a Georgian building by Eaton Square.
The project was developed through close collaboration with the homeowners, ensuring that every detail was tailored to their needs. The designers aimed for a quietly sophisticated home, free from fleeting design trends.
Architectural Features
Child Studio renovated the top two floors of the 280-square-metre townhouse, creating a double-height space finished in plaster. A mezzanine floor connects the living room to an outdoor roof terrace via a cast-iron spiral staircase.
In the living room, five-metre-tall mahogany shelves provide an elegant backdrop against the pale plaster walls. These shelves, inspired by the library in Karl Lagerfeld's Paris studio, accommodate the owners' extensive book collection.
Material Choices
The use of natural materials was a central theme, with the designers opting for hand-crafted wood, solid stone, and tactile fabrics to create a pared-back aesthetic that serves as a backdrop to the owners' lives. The bedroom features a striking undulating wooden headboard, enhancing the space's sculptural quality.
Custom Furniture
The design team crafted bespoke furniture, including a custom daybed and mahogany stool. In the dining room, they incorporated Chandigarh chairs and a desk lamp by Marcel Breuer.
Bathroom Design
The bathroom showcases a unique design, featuring almost entirely green Verde Guatemala marble, including a sculpted bathtub and sink. The curves of the marble blend seamlessly into the walls and floors, creating a luxurious atmosphere.
Conclusion
Child Studio's design approach reflects a commitment to craftsmanship and attention to detail, drawing from the elegance of early modernist villas. The renovated townhouse combines vintage and custom-made furniture, creating a cozy, lived-in atmosphere that is both elegant and functional.
