Archer + Braun's Limestone House Renovation
Architecture studio Archer + Braun has transformed a listed home in Edinburgh, introducing a limestone-clad extension characterized by expansive glazing.
The project, aptly named Limestone House, received its listed status during the design phase, which challenged the architects to blend contemporary style with the home’s historic fabric.
Innovative Design Approach
The interior, previously fragmented, has been reconfigured with a rear extension clad in Portland stone to harmonize with the original sandstone architecture.
Studio co-founder Stuart Archer emphasized the design's focus on creating unique spaces and views, stating, "The main concept was to propose a contemporary modernist extension inspired by the period property’s tones and materiality."
Functional Spaces
The single-storey extension features a kitchen, dining, and living area, defined by textured stone walls. A green corridor separates the new extension from the existing structure, maintaining views of the original walls.
At the front, a new two-storey guest suite replaces the old garage, topped with metal roofing that complements the home's natural aesthetic.
Connection with Nature
The extension incorporates expansive glazed openings that draw inspiration from mid-century Californian design, enhancing the connection between the home and its garden. A series of wooden steps lead down to the outdoor space, responding to the site’s sloping topography.
Preserving Historical Elements
Inside, the open-plan design focuses on outward views, with storage and a bathroom discreetly positioned. The existing layout was largely retained, with original decorative features refurbished in a neutral palette to highlight their beauty.
Conclusion
This renovation showcases a perfect blend of modern design with historical integrity, creating a harmonious living space that respects the past while embracing contemporary needs.
