The Vision Behind the Home
Architect John McAslan describes the renovation of his Victorian home in southwest London as creating an enfilade—a design that allows for a seamless flow of space, connecting the front door to the garden. His wife, Dava, echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the home's energetic movement.
Entrance and Hallway
The journey begins at a bespoke wooden gate that provides a unique welcome into the expansive interior. The hallway showcases original geometric period tiling and features a narrow glass window framing an olive tree in the side yard. This leads into a spacious living area and a large kitchen that extends into a dining area, complete with a Vitra table. A wall of sliding glass doors allows light to flood the ground floor.

John McAslan's Architectural Philosophy
John, the founder of John McAslan+ Partners, is known for his intervention and preservation approach, focusing on repurposing old buildings rather than demolishing them. His notable projects include King’s Cross Station and the revamped Burrell Collection in Glasgow. For their home, the McAslans aimed to create a beautiful, functional environment that reflects their values.
Renovation Process
The renovation involved remodeling and upcycling, with a focus on an ecological approach. The couple prioritized natural light and open spaces, achieving a layout that feels both clear and flexible. The first floor features their bedroom, a private sitting room, and a uniquely designed en suite bathroom, while the top floor includes flexible spaces for guests.
Personal Touches
The couple's love for adventure and travel is evident in their collection of furniture and art, including pieces from renowned designers like Pierre Jeanneret and Jorge Zalszupin. Their interiors are adorned with Bakelite collectibles, vintage rugs, and a diverse range of artworks that tell their personal story.
