Rediscovering Art Deco: The Glamorous Style Making a Comeback in Modern Design

A century after it was introduced at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris, Art Deco is experiencing a revival in decor, fashion, and more. This sophisticated style, known for its unapologetically glamorous roots, is captivating a new generation of design lovers.

A Signature Style of the Early 20th Century

Art Deco emerged after World War I, embodying a spirit of creativity, freedom, and innovation. As the 1920s and early ’30s became one of the most design-influential periods in history, this style flourished in Miami, particularly in the South Beach’s Art Deco District, which remains a major draw for visitors today.

In Paris, the 2024 Olympics organizers created Art Deco posters to celebrate both the games and the centennial of the 1924 Olympics, emphasizing the style's colorful influence on the city.

Flapper Fashion

The Flapper fashion of the 1920s mirrored the changing roles of women in society, with shimmering gold-and-black satin gowns making a statement on today’s runways. Celebrities such as Zendaya and Beyoncé are channeling the allure of the Deco era, showcasing drop-waist dresses, sleek bobs, and layers of pearls.

Designers like Giorgio Armani and Chanel have also embraced this aesthetic in their recent collections, featuring luxurious materials and styles that evoke the glamour of the past.

Decor Notes

New York-based interior designer Vanessa DeLeon highlights the elegance of Art Deco in her work, using deep hues and metallic accents. Meanwhile, the London design house Divine Savages incorporates cheeky nods to Deco's architectural drama in their collections. Athena Calderone collaborates with Crate & Barrel to create furnishings that reflect the cinematic Art Deco vibe.

For Art Deco enthusiasts, the exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York is a must-see. It features over 250 postcards showcasing the city’s iconic Deco buildings, alongside a selection of 1920s-era gowns and accessories. Curator Lilly Tuttle emphasizes that Art Deco was more than an aesthetic; it was the look that sold the city to the world.

The exhibition runs through February 17.
