Radical New Predator Design in 'Badlands' Trailer
The new design of the Predator in Predator: Badlands has sparked a lively debate among fans. The teaser reveals a younger, exiled Yautja with significant changes to its facial structure. The mandibles now extend farther, the brow appears smoother, and the bio-mask sits flush against a narrower skull. This transformation makes the iconic creature almost resemble a human, leading some viewers to initially believe the character was not a Predator.
While many fans have appreciated this fresh take, others are expressing their discontent with the changes after nearly 40 years of the original design. The debate highlights a common tension in franchises: whether to preserve beloved designs or to innovate for new stories.
Does It Matter the Predator Has Another New Look?
The original Predator showcased the dedication studios once had for creature design, with artists spending considerable time crafting unique characters. This commitment seems to wane as franchises evolve, leading to questions about when change is necessary versus when it's merely whimsical. Iconic horror characters, like Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, have undergone various redesigns over the years, sometimes for plot necessity and other times seemingly at random.
After the missed opportunity for a theatrical release with Prey, Badlands presents a chance for director Dan Trachtenberg to demonstrate that there remains a strong audience eager to see the Predator return to the big screen. The full impact of this redesign will be revealed when the film premieres in November.
