  • Designed for sustainability, with recyclable materials and energy generation.

  • MVRDV aims to engage city residents with the port through storytelling.

MVRDV has unveiled Portlantis, a striking new structure resembling a stack of twisting boxes. This energy-positive project is located in the Port of Rotterdam and features exhibition spaces designed to be dismantled and recycled at the end of its lifecycle.

Overview of Portlantis

Originally introduced in 2021 as the Harbour Experience Centre, Portlantis spans 3,533 sq m (38,000 sq ft) and consists of five stacked boxes, each housing unique exhibition areas. The building includes:

  • A large atrium at its center
  • A restaurant located near the top
  • Thematic exhibition spaces on each level with panoramic windows offering stunning views
  • A rooftop viewing point for an elevated perspective of the surroundings

Accessing these levels is made easy with a bold red staircase on the exterior, complemented by an elevator for convenience.

A Beacon of Exploration

MVRDV's founding partner, Winy Maas, describes Portlantis as not just an eye-catching structure, but also a watchtower that allows residents of Rotterdam to connect with the port area. It serves as a platform for storytelling and illustrates the changes occurring in the port and their impact on city life.

Sustainable Design Practices

Portlantis has been designed with sustainability in mind. When its useful life comes to an end, the building's facade panels will be returned to the manufacturer, and recyclable materials have been prioritized. The foundation is crafted to leave no permanent trace. Furthermore, the building generates 30% more energy than it uses, thanks to an on-site wind turbine and superior insulation, ensuring energy efficiency.

MVRDV continues to push the boundaries of architectural design with Portlantis, adding to their portfolio of innovative projects like the Valley and the Pyramid of Tirana.
