Exploring Life on the Isle of Jura
Wherever I am, I always take particular interest in how people relate to each other and their surroundings. Last spring, after returning from Ukraine, I sought to start a personal project closer to home, focusing on lives that have faced unique challenges. This led me to Hugh, who once employed me as a graphic designer before my photography journey began.
Years later, Hugh moved to the Isle of Jura in the Inner Hebrides with his dog, transforming a childhood summer retreat into his home. He married Jane, a local musician, and they raised two children in this remote community of only a couple of hundred inhabitants, accessible by an unreliable ferry with only one shop in town.
A Day in the Life
I was granted complete freedom to document their daily lives, capturing moments from dawn till dusk without intruding. I aimed to portray their reality, avoiding staged scenarios. I photographed the family in various settings: on the beach, in their garden, around the house, and even during a funeral, which brought the community together in a touching display of solidarity.
Capturing Pure Joy
On a particularly glorious day, while returning from a long walk, I witnessed a beautiful moment. Grace, the nine-year-old daughter, was playing on a swing. The sun broke through the mist, and as she jumped off the swing, her hair wildly tousled, I captured the essence of joy and freedom that characterizes life on Jura. This image encapsulates the spirit of the island, where children can run free, explore, and enjoy life without constraints.
A Unique Perspective
Surprisingly, the weather was idyllic for my entire stay, contrary to the usual torrential rains. Hugh and Jane expressed a desire for me to return during winter for another series, and I eagerly anticipate that opportunity.
