Senior Concept Artist

Astrid is a game and entertainment studio that is bringing together accomplished worldbuilders and game developers to create original IP that is anchored in games and can expand across many media experiences and platforms. We've embarked on our ambitious journey with a cooperative open-world sim, blending the best elements of RPGs with a creative sandbox approach. Our game is built on rich lore, immersive environmental storytelling, and dynamic system design to foster the emergence of multiplayer stories. Players will shape their worlds through their actions and choices, going on adventures, meeting fascinating characters, learning new skills and forging new bonds that will evolve and deepen over time. We are taking a fully remote approach, but have regular in-person meetups to synchronize, huddle and build our culture. We are currently seeking a Senior Concept Artist to become a vital part of our team. The successful candidate will work alongside the Art, Creative and Design Directors to help lead the vision of the project. You will help establish and bring our worlds to life starting from simple sketches to compelling and iconic hero art. Using your understanding of world building, terrain and architecture you should be able to think outside of the box to create an awesome visual experience. This is a remote position on a fully distributed team. Responsibilities

• Create Imagery that helps set the vision for the project and beyond
• Tell a story through these images that bring the world to life
• Help Astrid push the visual envelope by creating fantastical and magical open world concepts
• Incorporate character designs into environment concept art.
• Sketch, brainstorm, and refine ideas through concepts for gameplay and beyond daily
• Develop detailed concept art, paint-overs, storyboards, and orthographic concepts for 3D artists and animators

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience as a Concept Artist in the games industry or equivalent
• Experience designing powerful artistic key art imagery that can bring a world to life and tell a story
• Strong traditional drawing and painting skills with expertise in composition, lighting, color theory
• Excellent verbal, written, and visual communication skills while being comfortable working across multiple teams
• Someone who collaborates well with others
• Ability to work within gameplay design restraints (environment scale, character abilities, prototype function, etc.) and translate those into visuals that enhance the experience
• Proficiency with painting and drawing tools such as Photoshop
• Understanding of colors, shading and value structure
• Understanding how concept art can help establish look and feel of materials/shaders in video games
• Experience creating stylized designs and art style using inspiration from Miyazaki, Ghibli and other Eastern art influences.
